Earlier this year, we completed a particularly exciting and challenging project in Bilbao for Izaki Yoga: a large, fully insulated wooden yoga studio built in a private garden.
Measuring 12 × 6 metres, the custom-made timber building was designed to provide a comfortable, welcoming space for yoga classes throughout the year, while also creating a strong connection between the indoor studio and the surrounding garden.
At the end of August, almost six months after completing the project, we had the pleasure of visiting our customer again. The studio had been in regular use for several months, giving us the opportunity to see how the building had become part of the daily life of the yoga school and to take some new photographs.
The project was ordered in December. Our customer had ended the rental agreement for their previous yoga studio and needed to have the new space ready to open in March.
With only a few months available, the schedule was particularly demanding. The location in northern Spain also presented an additional challenge, as the winter months in Bilbao can bring plenty of rain and difficult working conditions.
Despite the tight timeframe, our team managed to complete the project on schedule.
After receiving the order, our technicians prepared the detailed plans for the building. Following a few small modifications requested by the customer, the plans were approved and sent to production.
Based on the approved plans, a local building company prepared the foundations and all the necessary infrastructure, including drainage, water supply and electrical connections.
Once the plans were approved, the cabin was manufactured in approximately five weeks before being delivered to Bilbao.
Our installation team then spent around 10 days assembling and finishing the building on site.
During this time, we built the cabin, installed the complete insulation system for the walls, floor and roof, fitted the exterior wooden cladding and installed a durable Icopal roofing system designed to provide reliable protection against the wet northern Spanish climate.
We also constructed the impressive 60 m² wooden terrace, creating a large outdoor area directly connected to the yoga studio.
At the same time, our installation team worked closely with the local building company. While we were assembling and finishing the wooden building, their team completed the electrical installation, including cables, sockets and lighting, and constructed the bathroom and connected it to the property’s water and drainage systems.
Finally, the building was painted and finished on site.
One of the most distinctive features of this fully insulated building is the large 5-metre-wide bi-fold door connecting the yoga studio with the terrace.
During the warmer months, the doors can be opened completely, allowing the yoga studio to flow directly onto the terrace. This means that classes can take place partly or entirely outdoors, depending on the weather.
The result is much more than a traditional garden building. The combination of the large glazed opening, spacious terrace and open-plan studio creates a flexible space where the boundary between the indoor and outdoor areas almost disappears.
The main objective was to create a comfortable yoga studio that could be used throughout the year, including during the colder and wetter months.
The combination of 70 mm timber walls, 100 mm mineral wool insulation, PIR insulation in the roof and floor, wind protection and a durable roofing system provides a well-insulated building suitable for the climate in northern Spain.
At the same time, the large bi-fold doors and 60 m² terrace make the building particularly enjoyable during spring and summer, when the studio can be opened completely towards the garden.
Almost six months after completion, it was great to see the building being used exactly as it was designed: as a comfortable indoor yoga studio that can also become an open-air space whenever the weather allows.
